Scarborough
Scarborough is the largest and most popular holiday resort on the Yorkshire coast. A high rocky promontory supports the 11th century ruins of Scarborough Castle and separates the sea front into a North Bay and a South Bay. The South Bay with its harbour, is the main focus for tourism, with a sandy beach, cafes, amusements, arcades, theatres and entertainment facilities.
The North Bay with its blue flag beaches, has traditionally been the more peaceful end of the resort and is home to Peasholm Park which has recently been restored to its Japanese-themed glory.
Dramatist Alan Ayckbourn is based in Scarborough where he has lived for a number of years. He has produced some sixty plays in Scarborough and is the artistic director of the famous Stephen Joseph Theatre, where almost all his plays receive their first performance. The town also plays host to the annual National Student Drama Festival, which takes place at the Stephen Joseph Theatre, the Spa Centre and other venues around the town. The Futurist Theatre is a theatre and cinema on the seafront, of the South Bay. The Open Air Theatre, seating 6,500, has been recently restored, and was officially opened by The Queen on 20 May 2010.
Scarborough has a reputation for being a fun-loving place with many bars, restaurants and nightclubs. There are also a wide variety of restaurants such as Italian, Indian, Mexican, Chinese Thai food and classic Fish venues.
Seafest is an annual festival which takes place at West Pier and around the harbour area in July. It celebrates the regions connection to fishing and hosts the regions biggest gathering of folk singers, shantymen and musicians. So far the programme has included the cream of the folk song , maritime and shanty world in the United Kingdom. It has also drawn artists from other nations including Senegal, Sicily, Canada, Éire, Luxembourg, Germany, Holland, Brittany and the USA.

Scarborough Castle - 2,500 year history, stunning location and panoramic views over the dramatic Yorkshire coastline, Scarborough Castle fully deserves its place as one of the finest tourist attractions in the North. It started life as an Iron Age Fort, was occupied by the Romans, became a Viking settlement and reached its heyday under Henry II.
Sea Life The Scarborough Sealife Centre is home to thousands of fascinating sea creatures.
Staintondale Shire Horse Farm - Horse and Pony Visitor attraction enjoyed by people of all ages. Live shows are a regular daily feature.
Peasholm Park - Peasholm Park in Scarborough is open for everyone to enjoy all year round, 24 hours a day and seven days a week with no entrance fee. Peasholm Park has a tranquil lake and in the summer months people can hire boats of all sorts to enjoy the water and scenery.
Futurist Theatre and Cinema - The Futurist provides varied entertainment for both local people and visitors, from major stars for one-off concerts to full staged weekly musicals, children's shows, ballet, one-off concerts, and of course the traditional summer shows.
When the Futurist is not presenting live entertainment it reverts to its role as a cinema, showing the latest blockbusters. The Futurist also offers conference facilities, with seating for 2150 people.
